Outdoor signage licence
Any outdoor sign or signboard advertising your business needs a licence under BCA's Advertisement Licensing System (ALS) — from $50 a year for a signboard of 15m² or less.
Any outdoor sign or signboard advertising your business needs a licence under BCA's Advertisement Licensing System (ALS) — from $50 a year for a signboard of 15m² or less. This covers ordinary shopfront signs, not just large hoardings.
An unlicensed signboard can be ordered removed, and BCA can also act against unsafe or unapproved signage on safety grounds.
Covers licensing bands, size limits and display requirements via BCA's ALS.
Who this is for
Any venue displaying an outdoor sign or signboard advertising the business.
What you’ll hold
- ALS licence for each outdoor sign displayed
Watch out for
- Treating a signboard as "just decoration" that doesn't need a licence — any outdoor sign advertising the business, however small, falls under BCA's licensing system.
- Not checking whether your town council or the building/mall management adds its own signage-permission layer on top of BCA's ALS licence — this wasn't independently confirmed for shophouse or heartland-facing units in this research pass, so ask your landlord or town council rather than assuming BCA's licence is the only approval needed.
- Forgetting the licence is annual (GIRO auto-renewal is typically set up for it) — letting it lapse leaves the sign technically unlicensed even if nothing physically changed.
