First aid requalification
Renewal training for your Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate, needed before the current one expires.
Renewal training for your Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate, needed before the current one expires. A 1-day EFAW requalification or 2-day FAW requalification keeps your certified first aider valid for another 3 years.
Certificates are valid for exactly 3 years, not "roughly" 3 years. Let one lapse by more than a month and HSE guidance points to retaking the full course rather than the shorter requalification, costing more time and money — and in the gap, you have no certified first aider on site.
Any HSE-approved first aid trainer can run requalification courses — this does not need to be your original provider.
Who this is for
Every venue that needs a certified first aider under its health and safety first aid needs assessment — in practice, almost all of them.
What you’ll hold
- Renewed first aid certificate
Watch out for
- Letting the certificate lapse by more than a month, which typically means retaking the full 3-day FAW course instead of the 2-day requalification.
- Having only one certified first aider, so a single missed renewal or period of leave leaves the venue with no cover at all.
- Booking the course too close to the expiry date and finding no places available in time.
