Lift / dumbwaiter LOLER examination
A thorough examination of your lift or dumbwaiter by a competent person, checking the structure, safety gear, brakes and controls, with a written examination report.
A thorough examination of your lift or dumbwaiter by a competent person, checking the structure, safety gear, brakes and controls, with a written examination report.
Lifting equipment that fails without warning can crush, trap or drop someone. LOLER makes regular thorough examination a legal duty, not a discretionary maintenance extra.
Ask for a written "Report of Thorough Examination" under LOLER, with the next due date confirmed on the report.
Who this is for
Any venue with a passenger lift, goods lift, or a dumbwaiter used to move food or stock between floors.
What you’ll hold
- LOLER "Report of Thorough Examination"
- A note of the next due date
- Evidence any defect flagged on the report was fixed
Watch out for
- Treating a manufacturer's routine service visit as a LOLER exam — they are only the same if the report meets LOLER's legal reporting requirements.
- Missing the 6-month deadline on a passenger lift because it gets scheduled on the same 12-month cycle as a goods lift elsewhere on site.
- Not acting on a defect marked "requires attention before [date]" — that is a legal deadline, not a suggestion.
