An annual check that you are still on the correct business rates relief — Small Business Rate Relief or Retail, Hospitality and Leisure relief in England, the Small Business Bonus Scheme in Scotland — and that your instalment plan matches how you actually want to pay across the year.
An annual check that you are still on the correct business rates relief — Small Business Rate Relief or Retail, Hospitality and Leisure relief in England, the Small Business Bonus Scheme in Scotland — and that your instalment plan matches how you actually want to pay across the year.
Relief schemes are reassessed each year and are not always carried over automatically, especially after a rateable value revaluation, a change of use, or taking on a second property. Missing a change means either overpaying rates you were entitled to have reduced, or discovering a relief has lapsed only when a larger bill arrives.
Who this is for
Every venue liable for business rates.
What you’ll hold
- Current rates bill
- Relief award confirmation
Watch out for
- Assuming relief renews itself — some schemes require a fresh application or confirmation each billing year.
- Not checking after a rateable value revaluation, which can push a venue over a relief threshold without anyone flagging it.
- Sticking with monthly instalments out of habit when a different plan would suit cash flow better — councils can usually adjust this on request.
