Refresher training for your appointed Food Hygiene Officer (FHO) — required wherever the kitchen is 16m² or more, or the premises spans two or more adjacent units. The FHO refreshes via FSC Level 1/2 retraining on the same uneven pattern as the basic handler course: the first refresher is due within 5 years of the original qualification, then every 10 years after that.
A premises above the 16m² threshold is required to have a currently-qualified FHO on record — this is also the threshold that places you in SAFE Framework Category 1, so an FHO qualification lapse and a grading review can land in the same inspection.
Who this is for
Any venue with a kitchen of 16m² or more, or occupying two or more adjacent units, that has an appointed Food Hygiene Officer.
What you’ll hold
- FHO refresher certificate (via FSC Level 1/2 retraining), dated
Watch out for
- Not reappointing or retraining an FHO when the person in the role leaves — the requirement is for a currently-qualified FHO on record, not a name on a certificate from years ago.
- Assuming the FHO’s own basic FSC Level 1 refresher (if they hold one from before appointment) covers this — the FHO refresher is tracked separately against their FHO qualification date.
- Missing that this threshold is the same one that determines SAFE Framework Category 1 status — letting the FHO qualification lapse can surface at the same time as a grading review.
