Tobacco retail licence renewal
Your HSA tobacco retail licence has to be renewed before it expires.
Your HSA tobacco retail licence has to be renewed before it expires. Renewal checks the same display and point-of-sale rules that applied when you first applied — no visible display to minors, and no advertising beyond what HSA permits.
Selling tobacco on a lapsed licence is the same offence as selling with no licence at all, and can result in fines and product seizure. It is checked separately from your food licence — a current Food Shop or Food Stall Licence does not cover tobacco sales.
WHEN
Every 12 months, before the expiry date shown on your licence.
COST
Renewal fee set by HSA
indicative, checked 2026-09
WHO DOES IT
You, online
LEGAL BASIS
Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act 1993; licensing administered by HSA.
Who this is for
Every venue holding an HSA tobacco retail licence.
What you’ll hold
- Renewed HSA tobacco retail licence, with the new expiry date — display it on the premises
Watch out for
- Assuming the licence renews alongside your Food Shop or Food Stall Licence — it is a separate application to a separate authority (HSA, not SFA).
- Letting product displays drift out of compliance with HSA’s point-of-sale rules between renewals, then having that surface as a problem at the renewal check.
- Missing the renewal because it is not the licence anyone in the venue thinks about day-to-day — it is easy to lose track of next to food and liquor renewals.
