Grease in ductwork is the single most common cause of serious commercial kitchen fires, and almost every insurance policy makes a current TR19 certificate a condition of cover. If you have a fire and cannot produce one, expect the claim to be challenged.
Ask for a TR19 Grease certificate with pre- and post-clean deposit readings and photos.
Who this is for
Any kitchen with a mechanical extract canopy and ductwork.
What you’ll hold
- TR19 Grease certificate with deposit thickness readings
- Before and after photographs of each access point
- A note of the next due date agreed with the contractor
Watch out for
- Accepting a "canopy and filter clean" as a TR19 clean. If the ductwork behind the canopy was not opened and cleaned, you do not have a valid certificate.
- No access panels in the duct run. Get them fitted at the baseline clean or every future clean will be partial — and partial cleans are what insurers reject.
- Filing the certificate and forgetting the date. This is exactly the line that lapses.
